France Travel Guide

La Belle France. The most visited destination in the world. This country has been synonymous with romance for longer than you would care to remember. It is impossible to place France under any particular category for tourists.

West of France is turned towards the Atlantic Coast. In the north Normandy & Brittany have rolling hills, sandy beaches and quiet little harbour towns. Normandy & Brittany have a more rugged coast and many neolithic sites. It has quite a distinct atmosphere from the rest of the country; you can still sense the Celtic origin of the region and its inhabitants.

Farming and self-employed craftsmen make up the economic fabric. Nestled between the Creuse Valley and the Black Valley, a region dear to novelist George Sand, Aigurande is very much a place of water. The Bouzanne river rises here, the Vauvre meanders through the town and many wells can be seen in squares or at the back of courtyards.

Easter is celebrated in France much as it is in America, with various religious ceremonies commemorating the rebirth of Jesus, and cultural customs having to do with rabbits, chocolates and eggs.

The predominant religion in France is Roman-Catholic (90%).  No city, village or town is without a church.  Many of them date back to the twelfth century or before.
